I’m on chapter 17. Mulan is trying to save Captain Li Shang who was mortally wounded & is going to die. She’s traveled with ShiShi, the lion guardian of the Li family, to the underworld, Diyu, in order to save him. But she only has until sunrise to save Li Shang. Mulan & ShiShi found Shang and now they are trying to get out of Diyu before sunrise. Mulan is getting some help from some of her Fa family ancestors.

I’m on chapter four.

Shang is being a total douche canoe about Mulan's real identity. Like sir, just because she has a vagina and boobies doesn't negate all of the amazing personality traits and brave actions she's taken both under your banner and for your literal soul. Get over yourself. ShiShi knows what's up.

Well, Mulan just revealed her identity to Shang and I'm sooooo frustrated. I was annoyed at first that Mulan was fighting with herself so much on wether or not to reveal her identity. Being in the underworld kidna makes that detail seem less important. But now I see why.
I guess that just shows my privilege in never having been so harshly stigmatized and poorly treated like she is for being a woman in my culture.

I'm loving this retelling omg. I loved Elizabeth Lim's writing in her Six Crimson Cranes duology, and so when I saw she wrote some of the twisted tales books I decided to give them a second try. I've dnf'd the first two (Aladdin and Sleeping Beauty), but this one hits so different. I love the pieces of Chinese mythology and culture we're getting. I feel like it adds so much to the original story and characters.

I want to keep reading, but it’s late at night and I need sleep. 😔😔

They defeat the fire demon and Shang flies them the the 99th level where they are told they need to face the hall of mirrors and their inner demons. Mulan conquers them being confident in herself and the choices she made. She and Shang win the bet and are met on the bridge to the living by everyone. They get back and at first Shang, recovering, thinks it’s all a dream but Mulan tells him it wasn’t & they live HEA

The Fa ancestors guide them through the short cut and question her about being ping. They make it through to the 97th level where Shang pieces it together that ping is lying about something big and Mulan comes clean. Shang and chichi leave her and she gets tricked by the spirit of forgetting, into thinking she is home and she has made her parents proud. Shang rescues her and they make it to 97 and fight a fire demon

Mulan and chichi, the Lee family guardian, find Shang and start their journey, they stumble upon the spirit that wipes memories and barely made it out but demons are chasing them. They climb a mountain made of knives and chichi stays behind to fight the horde of demons once at the top chichi reunites with them but ghosts try to hurt them until the Fa family come to their rescue and skeptically lead them to the exit.

Shang is the one severely wounded by Shan Yu during the avalanche. Mulan saves him and insists on tryin to save his life and bring him to the imperial city, against shi fu’s orders. During the journey they fall behind and while they are sleeping general Lee ghost visits his son and asks mulan to save him. She is escorted to the underworld by the Lee family guarding and is told to find him before the sun comes up

This is so good!! There was just a ‘Mulan 2’ reference and it made me so unexpectedly emotional, lol. It was so sweet. The way this is woven together with both movies and also it’s very own story…it fits perfectly, and I can’t put it down. I was super reluctant to read it at first because Mulan is my favorite Disney “princess,” but I’m so glad I finally am!
