Entertaining as usual, but seems to be dragging on forever - just about ready to skim ahead last 100 pages or so…

“The proconsul of Baetica was a typical Vespasian appointee: he looked like a pig farmer. His tanned face and ugly legs would not have counted against him when he was chosen to sit here on an ivory seat between the dusty set of ceremonial rods and axes…Vespasian would have noted his illustrious career… and would also have marked the shrewdness behind the man’s intent hooded eyes.“

Something Davis does extraordinarily well is pace. It’s constantly cracking, with most chapters being 3-4 pages long. Plenty of line-breaks for changes in scenery, short leaps ahead in time, or to signal conversing with new characters … but the flow remains impeccable. It’s really, really impressive - and also works to give Marcus a feeling of perpetual motion.

It feels like a long time since I last read any Falco. Looking forward to reacquainting myself with him.

Falco and Helena (7 months pregnant!) have traveled to Corduba, in Spain, to investigate a murder and shenanigans in the olive oil market.
