I think my reading experience is suffering from all the other Mars stories and current Mars research and science that I’ve been exposed to before reading it. The opening was so intense and the subsequent section intriguing but the science feels dated, which is not the book’s fault. I shall have to mentally adjust to “this is both what was known and also fiction”.

This 160-page long chapter was pretty incredible, reminded me of Miller’s arc in The Expanse. John using his status as the first man on mars to aid in his investigation and go where a normal detective couldn’t, until the walls begin to close in on him. Utilizing the Martian geography we get to explore the gradually settled planet in a new, quietly tense way.
