Very dense theoretical writing but surprisingly apolitical so far. Often seen as the foremost literary symbol of the "New Left," his area of critique seems highly focused on the false dialectic created by the media establishment.

Also, the restrictions created by what he calls "Functional" or "Operational" language.

The language isn’t very accessible. Kind of hard to read.

So far it’s just been the introduction, but i appreciate Marcuse’s radical perspective while not leaning to any particular side. Everything deserves critical analysis and ultimately all forms of governance are flawed.

Het voorwoord van Thijs Lijster is alvast 5⭐️. Ook een aanrader voor wie dit boek juist niét leest.

Mira que he leído libros de mierda (Han te miro a ti), pero nunca he leído algo tan mal escrito y con una jerga tan innecesariamente oscura que, en comparación, Adorno me parece mas coherente escribiendo. Marcuse, al igual que gran parte de la E. F, solo suelta verborrea y pedantería para no decir nada o, en el mejor de los casos, para decirlo todo mal.

El capítulo dedicado al arte y la estética es idealismo puro hacía la "alta cultura" y el arte feudal, por no hablar de la abstracción histórica que realiza Marcuse sobre los movimientos artísticos como el decadentismo y el romanticismo. No obstante, he de reconocer que el apartamento dedicado al lenguaje y al desdoblamiento y simplificación de los conceptos es un banger.

A discussion on the system can be problematic in two ways:
1. Assuming the system is a simple aggregation of individuals; it will be naive
2. Describing the system and using academic jargons and metaphors instead of trying to break down to individual level. I feel like it is the problem of this book.

I’m out of my depth when it comes to philosophy and can’t levy too much particular criticism in rebuttal, but I do feel this is overwrought.
