Possibly my favorite start to a Wharton novel; scheming lovers on a mission

Nick Lansing and Susy Branch don’t have money, but they’ve got charm and good looks, so they live off the generosity of their wealthy friends. Yet both characters crave something deeper—real love, dignity, and a sense of belonging that can’t be borrowed like a palazzo in Venice. I’m quite expecting the whole thing to end in a full-blown tragedy.

i think this book is really about female vulnerability in a world that demands material worth

the only issue i have with coming to this conclusion more than halfway into the book is why this wasn't foregrounded a bit more at the start (or maybe i'm just dumb)

nick, buddy, let me hold your hand when i say this-- what else did you expect her to do???? wait and throw herself at your feet and beg you to stay? that was not the nature of the arrangement you had, buddy!!! playing cat and mouse is not going to work!
