On going guerrilla warfare in the baltic states after WW2 ended N to S -> Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania
Fighting the soviets, they got little to no help from the West.
Last Forest Brother died in the 70s, caught fishing by a soviet patrol.

Yugoslavia resisted stalin but most could not.
Big communist pressure to submit to central authority.

Ch 5 on Nationalism
Posits 2 forms of nationalism
1) civic nationalism - built on ideals , principles, open and inviting, progressive
2) ethnic nationalism - built on community or tribe, hereditary or immutable things aa person or people like being Jewish, or Hungarian descent, so closed and conservative (conserving our heritage)

1400-1500s the polish overtook the Lithuanian peoples stretching from baltic sea to Ukraine, those on the hinter lans, the free free peoples were cossacks. Rough riders pioneer peoples, later would become the police of the Russian empire

Ch2 - waves of conquest criss crossing eater. Europe Lithuanians, Bulgarians empire magyars / Hungarians, germans, mongols in 1241, who amazingly left off the conquest of Europe in 1242 - they were called home because the supreme Khan had died and they had to choose a successor. Good king Wenceslas, a bohemian Duke from the 900s was kind to the poor.
