Know that it feels as cruel as it sounds,

that I forget everything except the one thing

I cannot. That I am sorry that I love

what I am sorry for.

 I said we build buildings to house pieces of our past and they laughed clinked their glasses.

We survived the night only to find, as was true of the morning,

we were not who we thought we were. An unexpected chill,

a small relief.

I wish I felt it in me to wish you well.

When goodwill tells me to be tender,

I have a trick: what I’m incapable of feeling,

I imagine as a place—

this throbbing in my brain

is now the sound of your rowing toward

what I pray is, if not home, then mercy.
