Status Updates From Homesick For Another World

I’m not quite sure how to feel about Bettering Myself? It doesn’t really go anywhere, but it’s an interesting peak at someone deeply hurt and not making the best of decisions to put it lightly…

“Bettering Myself” Already off to a great start- I love Ottessa Moshfegh’s writing. Relatable even when not- she writes people for who they are: disgusting creatures that put on the skin of being perfect.
And I’m already off-put by this main character having read Eileen.

Short Story #13- “The Locked Room”

All of these kind of end the same way.

Short Story #12- “The Surrogate”

I didn’t get this one at all.

Short Story #11- “Dancing In The Moonlight”

A lot of the stories share similar things- a scarf, pimples, etc. I’m also fascinated by the food these people eat. I still think about the rubbery cold refrigerator bagels from Death In Her Hands.

Short Story #10- “Nothing Ever Happens Here”

Damn right it doesn’t.

Short Story #9- “The Beach Boy”

Wut.

Short Story #8- “An Honest Woman”

Kinda boring.

Short Story #7- “Slumming”

This was ok. In addition to my complaints about this book, I’m starting to think a collection of short stories isn’t for me.

Short Story #6- “No Place For Good People”

If it’s offensive, it’s in this book.

Short Story #5- “The Dark and Winding Road”

This was tolerable.
