Pospelov is a delightfully slippery character, always having the exact right thing to say.

The relationship between Shosty and his first wife is portrayed interestingly, almost like a version of ENM before it was established as such, which seems hard to believe for the USSR

Twice in one chapter the very “this is the way things have always been!” revisionism! Very Soviet :)

Barnes clearly has an appreciation for composers because half the time I have no fucking idea what he’s talking about
