Things were pseudo-hygienic. Face-masks were an essential. I saw Mervyn soon after the birth...
In the afternoon, the door was pushed open and he came in, maskless, with a painting, still wet, that he had done to celebrate the birth. I hardly caught sight of it before he was pushed out of the room in a most irate fashion and told not to return without a face-mask, and certainly not with such a germ-laden anachronism
