"The Social Triangle" is a great story about those who we look up to and who they look up to. The twist was slightly obvious, but how O.Henry got there was great

Whoever said money can't buy love hasn't paid $3000 to create a false traffic jam in NYC so that his son can propose to some random.lady he kind of knows.

"The Love-Philtre of Ikey Schoenstein" is short and to the point. Ikey, educated pharmacist is well respected, but shy. He is friends with a man who loves the woman he also loves. His friend asks for a "love potion," an Ikey pretends to oblige while sabotaging his friend's plan. Hilarity, and a heartwarming character change, ensues.

"The Gift of the Magi" is one of my favorite short stories ever, and rereading it brought a smile. Dipping into this book at random times has been great

“[…]; nor do I assume to master the thoughts of any human heart; […]” uuuuh but you do, Mr O. Henry

Interestingly, this collection starts with one of my least favorite O. Henry stories. I picked this up because I remember that I loved the stories I read by him when I was younger, but "The Plutonian Fire" did not work for me.

I love O. Henry’s surprise endings! I was already familiar with The Gift of the Magi, but found many other gems in this volume!

This reminds me of one of those pretentious high school students (which could have been me, 50 years ago) who think impressive writing is about using multi-syllable words he just scoured from the dictionary. And where would he publish? In the Reader's Digest, of course. 😄
Still it is occasionally amusing and the cleverness, in a limited kind of way, is apparent.

Short stories with unexpected twists at the end of each one, and doesn't require a ton of concentration which is great for me when I'm tired.

"Whenever he is called upon, pointedly, for a story, he will maintain that his life has been as devoid of incident as the longest of Trollope's novels. But lured, he will divulge."
Quite relatable!

I've decided it. The Count and the Wedding Guest has overwritten After 20 Years as the best story.

So far, After 20 Years is my most favorite.
