This was lovely! It felt like a mix of fairytale and historical fiction. The characters were really well developed even within their relatively short storylines and the way they all tied together at the end was sweet. This would be a good introduction to historical fiction for middle grade readers.

This is one of the best books I ever read. It combines both mystery and fantasy from different angles. And it has three main characters?! Chef's kiss. My favorite librarian recommended this book and said, You need to read this. You will not regret it. So far, I am not regretting it. But 600 pages? It's long, but I am a fast reader, and I think I might finish it soon.

Super sad hate that they ended Friedrich’s life would’ve been better if they let him complete his story imo
