Was really excited to find this one finally. Serge’s writing is excellent

They’ve pulled the last piece of the case out from his exile in the far east.

The Party is pinning Tulayev’s murder on several old members.

End of a story about a peasant that rose to be the regional leader and supervised years of famine. Then onto a story about an agent of the Council doing some reconnaissance in Spain during the civil war.

Another party official expects to be pinned to a crime next, but he and his wife argue whether it is better for the cause to play along with the lie of his guilt. Meanwhile he visits old friends out in the snow for the last time.

A High Commissar is forced to go on leave and when he returns he is arrested, most likely because he can’t find someone to blame for the murder of another official.
