So fascinating that the Catholic has ended up among Protestants and the Protestant among Catholics. The presentation of religion in this novel is even more fascinating than usual because of how close in time to the Reformation and how unwieldy Protestantism still was. This Montauban chapter is quite amusing.

OK—I think I’ve got all the Barons, Chevaliers, Dukes, and Sirs figured out!! 😅 Getting your footing in CMY can sometimes take a few chapters, but it’s always worth it!

“Lucy was standing…under the latticed window near the large oak-table, a white apron over her dress, presiding over the collecting of elder-berries…The maids stood round her with an array of beechen bowls or red and yellow crocks, while barefooted, bareheaded children came thronging in with rush or wicker baskets of the crimson fruit, which the maids poured in sanguine cascades into their earthenware”

“he soon fell into a state of bewilderment rather hard on his pupil, who, though a very good boy, and crammed very full of learning, was still nothing more than a lad of eighteen in all matters of prudence and discretion.”

Loving discovering Lottie’s historical fiction! She is so good! I just need a character list. So many names and titles. I know it will all become clear but it’s always a lot at the beginning!
