This book is like the Beatles’ A Day In The Life. It’s a lyrical rhapsody with odd arrangements that make the entire thing sound like a weird trip or fever dream.

The prophetess Ayesha is a conflicting figure. While she does wonders for the success of the true believers, her fundamental submission to god accepts the stoning of an illegitimate child. The believers follow her into the sea, seeing it part while the sceptics see them drown. Rushdie leaves us to answer the question what faith is able to do - at a cost though.
