Status Updates From The Hunchback of Notre-Dame

The opening of the book, a brilliant description of Paris and, zooming in, the setting and subjects of the first chapters, greatly impressed me.

Then the story began. It appeared to me to be aimless but by the end of chapter four I see what Hugo had been doing. Everything we need to understand the theme and the world are set down.

Now, with ch. 5, Quasimodo enters into that world.
