A great book to read as a nonfiction companion to the Newbery Honor book Al Capone Does my Shirt. So far I've learned about all the different uses of the island and about some of its most famous residents, including Al Capone.

i am now finshed with the book. i think it was a good book because i liked when the prisoners tryed to escape but couldnt.i read how alcatraz is today. it is used for tourists to see and to learn its history.some people are allowed to go into the cells where the prisoners were.they let them talk through the tiolets just like the prisoners did.some of the guards that they hear voices in the halls.

i read that the indians still remain in alcatraz. thr us doesnt like that because they want the land for something else. the indians stay thier for a long time. they open schools and other educational things for the children. studio. they fix the old builings to live in comfortably in them but their are only some working things that worked. the first week the stayed their they celebreated thanksgiving.

so far i read about when alcatraz closed.it closed because of the escape in 1962.the prison was no longer escape proof and it was old.the walls almost fell because of the salt water that made the concrete less hard.it closed down the next year.the indians who owned the land before the prison was made whated it back.the US didnt like the indians staying in the island. they stayed for over 19 months

so far i read about one of all the escapes in alcatraz that worked.the men thought of everything they even made fake heads to trick the gaurds. the men dug through the walls and went to the top of the building. then they went to the mainland and built a raft from raincoats. they headed for angel island then the next day the guards found out that they were missing so they are trying to find them they are never found

so far it was just about prison escapes. all of the prisions who tryed this were shot or drowed. the ones who lived were put in isolation or were sentenced for life without parole depening on the escape. many prisoners died while escapeing. one of famous prisoners to go to jail was a guy who was very violete. but he liked birds and tests on them while serving his time but not while in alcatraz.

i read about alcatraz it was a prison. all the criminals that were too dangerous were sent there.one of the most famous criminals was al capone it was hard to get him in jail becase he would bribe people. it was a good book. i learned a lot about alcatraz
