Status Updates From A Defense of Masochism

I haven’t read many books on gender studies and sexuality. Her writing style feels like a friendly introduction for me. Philip’s references movies like “A Touch of Evil” and “Sliver,” interesting to mix film studies with gender studies. Sometimes the writing is clunky and I’m not sure what she’s getting at but overall some interesting points are raised every now and again.

Masochism allows for refreshment or renewal

“Masochism is not just something morbid, not just an expression of death drive, but a mixture of two opposing wishes, for life and for death, for the gratification of pleasure and the desire to engage with the downside-for example, the need to repeat unpleasant experiences.”p.32

“What the changeability of fashion indicates is that we never want to throw out an image of ourselves that we could possibly return to.” P.11

This book is proving to be more tedious than I could ever imagine the subject of masochism to be. I just fell asleep mid-chapter...
