Very well written, but so dense! I’m trying to read this for the third time now. Hopefully third time lucky. I think this book could benefit from an accompanying text explaining to those like myself without a musical background how the keys and chords work and what they sound like… or maybe a basic playlist of keys and chords like you might give to a beginning music student?

2. Dr Faust

Pre war French come on to the scene- interestingly Debussy is piping up that he wants to compose as Turner paints (easy breezy and full of light) but I think his work still requires a lot of concentration to enjoy (not very easy breezy). Same with Satie - I probs just listen to the bits I like and didn't realise there were constipated piano pieces as well.

Imo being a snob got in the way of their vision

Non fiction whatt

Chapter 1 - fin de siecle (1900-1930s)

Mahler and Strauss were frenemies, Mahler a bit serious who listened to Freud and Nietzsche too much and Strauss the fanboy turned maestro.

Personally not a massive fan of either of their work, there's a bit too much going on. Less drama and more space to listen pls. Guess it's the musical equivalent of a gothic renaissance painting or a really tannic red
