This is classy historical fiction, with a nice amount of anachronism. Fantastic women. I'm glad I went to the bother to order in 2ndhand. -- I've had his other novel _Books of Bale_ for most of my life, sitting about unread; now of course I can't find it.

End book one. Kind of brilliant. Very political, and dedicated to Subject Peoples.

End of Part III -- life with pirates and jumping ship. Meets Cuttlefish again. Mule-Driver.

Political unrest, war in Walls of Love. Where are Cuttlefish and Irene? Ivory taken on board pirate ship, Lady Jael.

Great feeling for the feel of the ancient theatre. Seems like book is like a play -- Books I-IV being like 4 acts of a play. Dialogue is great! Anachronisms abound. Lots of modern theatre slanb and Anglo-Indian slang. I love the atmosphere.

Using sobriquets for the characters bothered me at first, but now I'm getting used to it. I see the narrator's rationale: : it's a secret memoir and he's disguising the names, e.g., Marius [the Mule-Driver]; Sulla [The Stain], etc. Narrator himself is called Ivory [from the white mask he wears in the women's parts he plays].
