Shock registered on his face; whether it was genuine she had no idea. “Wait, you don’t understand. It was the guys. I didn’t make the bet.”

Aww shit. Things were going to well to be true.

“What’s wrong? Is the makeup too much? I told Louise to lay off with the lipstick, but she insisted—”
"Nothing’s wrong,” he assured her. “You...holy shit, you look incredible”

“Remind me to give you a bonus,” Mason told Jane, and the woman practically beamed.
“Hey, what about me?” Louise asked.
“You’re not on my payroll. Take it up with your Sister."

To say she looked stunning would have been an understatement. The red lace dress clung to her curves and gave a mouth-watering view of her cleavage. A slit went up the left side that showed a glimpse of her taut, tanned leg. A bold splash of crimson covered her lips, completing the ensemble and transforming her into a walking wet dream.

“Don’t let him break your heart, sis. It’s a pain you’ll never forget.”

She twisted in her seat to face Carter, her vision blurred. The dam had broken, and tears spilled out in a noisy snuffle.
“Aw, shit.” Carter leaned across the console and gathered her into his arms. The faint scent of soap and aftershave enveloped her senses as he rubbed circles up and down her back. “Don’t get all mushy on me now...

I guess having a brother in the Marines is never easy.

“But Louise said you could end up paralyzed if you fall.”

“Yeah, and if I drive, I could die in an accident. Or the plane I fly in might crash. Or someone might cough on me at the supermarket and give me some horrible, incurable disease. Sooner or later, something’s going to kill me, but in the meantime, I might as well enjoy my life.”

“He turned to face her. “Do you ever worry about falling?”
She nodded. “Right before every jump.”
“Then why do it?”
Her features hardened—just a fraction, but enough to be noticeable. “Because I refuse to let fear destroy something I love.”
