Engaging for both me and my students. Detailed characterization and setting descriptions, and I’m learning all about the parts of a ship.

…. 😐 ….. okay I knew it was going to get bad but I didn’t think it was going to happen that fast… a trigger warning or something would’ve been nice 🥲 that chapter was a tough read.. I was shielding my eyes and lowkey even fighting tears for a moment. Genuinely at a loss for words and I have no idea what to expect next.

I’m still incredibly surprised at how much I am enjoying this book 😭 it’s a page turner for sure. I think we just reached a pivotal inciting incident and some shit is about to pop off. I still don’t know if Captain Jaggery is to trusted or not. I’m also now suspicious of Mr. Hollybrass, too, for some reason

“A ship sails with any wind she finds” (chapter 2. Pg 29)
I was slightly doubtful at first, but this writing has quickly become very fun to read. Right now I’m praying that Zachariah remains an ally to Charlotte because I have a feeling that things are going to take a turn for the worse based on the story he told her about the crew. I’m also skeptical of her admiration for Captain Jaggery.

A book I read in primary school lives deep in my mind and I remember snippets every now and then. I think it's this book, so we're having a listen to see if it is/how the story compares to what exists in my brain.
I remember reading it at the time and thinking it was something I shouldn't be reading 😂

“A sailor chooses the wind that takes the ship from a safe port. Ah, yes, but once you’re abroad, as you have seen, winds have a mind of their own. Be careful, Charlotte, careful of the wind you choose.”

(Re read of a beloved book first introduced to me in 5th grade)
I’d like to note for the SBDPERC that in this reread I’ve taken note of the sheer number of em dashes. I think this is where it comes from…when you fight me, you fight Avi.

This just took a HUGE turn and I love it. The argument between charlotte and jaggery is perfectly written. Unnatural and unusual are placed and work out amazing. I can’t believe jaggery has sent her to be hanged, but knowing charlotte, she will escape it.

This story is very entertaining and full of excitement with rebellious actions. It has shown the good and evil sides of each character and is structured very well. I love how it demonstrates charlotte from being a frightened girl to becoming a brave and fearless young woman when she becomes a sailor. I’m currently in the middle of the trial and hope to see a great conclusion.

So far I’ve been introduced to charlotte, Mr Grummage, Mr keetch, Zachariah, Barlow, and most importantly captain jaggery. These characters are well-built and have good purposes. I love the mysterious conflict between the crew and the captain, and can’t wait to learn more. I’m definitely invested in this book.

Charlotte is on her way back to Rhode Island from Liverpool, England. Some who she wakes up to seeing her dirk on the floor and needs to return it to Zachariah but dillingham see's it in charlotte's hand. Which isn't good.
