Collins is presenting a warehouse of linguistics theory, which 1) comes without citations and 2) may be overwhelming and off-putting for those who (like me) were expecting a breezier book about the highs and lows of language learning and and bilingual relationships.

I was expecting a personal account of learning French, which is included, but there is a lot of language history as well. Some readers disliked the mix of history and autobiography, but it's interesting and engaging. She comes from the land that spawned "freedom fries"! Remember that madness, which seems tame now.

What is Love in French? Given the title, I was anticipating stories of her romance with, and eventual marriage to, a French man, as well as stories about learning the French language. Instead it's history lessons, stories about her and her husband living in Geneva, her childhood, and her family.
