Interesting retelling of Agamemnon’s actions and its effects on his family during and after the Trojan war - seems to be a lot of imagination on his part, but I liked it, it was an easy read!

Barely started and already the most devastating telling of the Iphigenia sacrifice

"Perhaps the gods keep the memory of death locked up in their store, jealously guarded. Instead, the gods release feelings that were once pure or sweet. Feelings that mattered once. They allow love to matter since love can do no harm to the dead."

Orestes’ chapters are a little flat compared to Clytemnestra, but I’m still enjoying the book overall.

I have finished with this as it was not for me and I didn't think it matched my other Tóibín reads.

I was surprised to be so enthralled by the chapter on Orestes and his travels between Agamemnon’s death and his avenging. It’s an aspect of the myth that I’ve never read about before and it’s been written really well! :)

Another thing, now Agamemnon is saying that Cassandra’s prophecies helped him win battles? Two things, she was a Trojan princess who was taken AFTER the fall of Troy. In addition, she was cursed to never be believed when she spoke of the future. She did not have the time, desire, or even the ability to help Agamemnon win battles.

This retelling describes Cassandra as haughty, disdainful, and entitled. Tóibín described her looking around, “as though this were a country that in her dreams had always belonged to her and had become real merely to satisfy her.” She was cursed by Apollo to see the future, but never be believed, and she knew she would be murdered. This fact and her description do not line up. Does this bother everyone else?

Proper naff. A real ‘fulfillment of contractual obligation’ of a book.
