💕my daughter . . . led me to where I sat now. I sank down, seeming to juxtapose myself of tomorrow with that of today. My daughter knelt at my feet, smiling with red lips, her eyes dark like mine but with the shape of Donata's. "Here, Papa," she said, and patted the floor at my feet. I snapped open my eyes. My daughter had vanished, the light that had filled the tomb gone as well.

💕 I lifted my daughter to see the beautifully painted birds and beasts on the walls, the colors so resonate that the animals seemed to move. My daughter clapped her hands in delight, then squirmed to get to her feet.
As soon as she touched the ground, she ran down the tunnel toward the burial chamber. I followed in alarm, . . .

💕One of my favorite scenes. . . I seemed to see myself walking on the bright sand of the desert, but I carried a little girl in my arms. She was about three years old, and wore in her hair the gold and rubies that we'd found, the jewels flashing in the sunlight. . .

A slow-starter compared to the others, but it's picking up now.

While the descriptions of Egypt sometimes bog me down, I am always delighted by these characters and their friendships.

So, there is no explanation about how they came to arrive just in time. The tramping of many feet brought us up short. I turned to behold the pasha’s palace guard, twenty men armed with swords and rifles, no mercy on their faces. Behind them came the four cavalrymen I’d taught, who looked as grim as the guards.

In the middle of a pile of sandy gravel the glimmer of gold, bright blue of lapis, and the blood-red fire of rubies winked up at me.

I was the first human eye to see them for centuries. The thought made me shiver in awe, but also humbled me.

“Ancient thieves,” Brewster rumbled. “Looks like what a bloke might cut toward a cache in a strongroom, say, or the cellar of a rich gent’s estate.”

However, I was now a proper Englishman, a gentleman’s son married to an earl’s daughter. I should be as uncomfortable as possible to show the natives here how superior I was.

I love this series, have read them all. This is one of the best. The tone is not as "dark" as some of the stories. I often read the earlier stories and felt that poor Capt. Lacey might as well give up. Now Lacey is happy in his personal life and looking forward to his new child with eagerness. Good mystery, great setting. Go for it.
