This reminds me a bit of Daly's "Arrow Pointing Nowhere," where someone tries to summon help by tossing notes in the form of balls out the window in the hope that they will be forwarded to Henry Gamadge. In "Death and Letters," Sylvia Coldfield is being held prisoner by her family, so she creates a crossword puzzle with a hidden message, which is forwarded to Gamadge. Very original.
