the transfer of influence from pablo to roberto is highlighted as well in the smell of the absinthe fumes diffusing across the cave. it’s a unique and strong smell that cannot be ignored and is foreign against the wine that pablo says is running out in deceit. pablo taking more cigarettes than the others, instead of showing power shows greed, ego and inadvertent submission

some thoughts so far:
we know her name to be pilar, but hemingway often refers to her as the woman of pablo (la mujer de pablo). it’s a striking contrast to her evident independence and superior ‘political’ standing against pablo. it reminds us of the conservativeness of spanish culture, which we has been claimed with religion by the fascists, and makes her actions as a revolutionary that much more impactful.

finally finished my masters and immediately filling my time with reading, can’t let my mind empty long enough to have thoughts …. i’ve been saving this book and so far for good reason. i love hemingways writing and his drawbacks (pretty terrible portrayals of women) are somewhat countered in this by pilar. running out of characters but i love the writing style, especially having studied spanish
