“What are condoms?” Connor asks once he’s returned with a Lunchable pizza, seemingly content with the way his dinner has turned out.
“Ask Mama,” Will says.
“No, ask Patrick,” Olivia says, grabbing a pepperoni from Connor’s package. “He’ll tell you the truth.”

He needs Will but he can’t have that for another twenty-three days, ten hours, and four minutes, so there’s only one other choice. He taps Dinah’s name and waits.
“Pat, honey? It’s good to hear from you.”
He’s silent. He doesn’t know what to say. He stares into the glare of the sun on the snow and hopes he doesn’t cry.
“Honey, are you okay?”
“No. I’m coming home.”
