I feel a bit offended on behalf of Shannon for David responding to her story of her traumatic childhood and her mom's dying advice - watch out for yourself above all- with - but you figured out that's not helpful right? 🙄

Maybe he's saying aw that's how you grew up but something changed because you're so selfless and such an advocate now. Maybe.

I also am embarrassed to realize , again, that I always assume book characters are white unless it's made clear. Several, possibly all the characters and the author herself are black which I think is kind of rare for this time and genre. I can't find anything about the author, and she seems to have only published about 5 books. What happened to her?

This started out kind of insipid, bland. Typical 80s/90s kind of court thriller and not really memorable writing. Some creepy "romance" with forcing someone to eat chocolate covered cherries and tricking her into a kiss.

Then suddenly the kind of boring wife has a wild tragic backstory, and there is a complicated conspiracy at work. Im interested and this is moving right along
