When Sikes is drunk, he has a "pokey cheek" and he isn't taking care of himself or his family.

When Cassie's mom calls Sikes a "charm boy" it makes me think she didnt want to marry him but he convinced her.

This book, had an okay ending, I had finished it yesterday. I was kind of sad when the dad apologized to Cassie about leaving her at the track 10 years ago, after their family had totally trashed his house, but the dad gave the house away so they could have somewhere to live on Diamond Street ! I recommend this book to people who like mystery or kind of tragic stories !

Since their "Old Daddy" or real dad has now become a stranger, it's kind of awkward that the family is inviting him over. Ellis ' "New Daddy" has passed away from Cancer, and the family needs money. The mom has been left with so many kids. They want to use him for his money, and because their relationship with each other, the kids also agree with this. I find this pretty sad, because that's still their father.

This book is very depressing. Cassie, hasn't seen her dad. She calls"new daddy" Daddy, and doesn't talk much about her old father anymore. Cassie and Jamie's father is truly trying to do his best. But right now he is out of the picture when it comes to his kids. Ellis, "New Daddy" and Their mom have 2 kids together. In total, He has 5 kids and now these two are his responsibility. I can see why Cassie is like this.

I think that Cassie is starting to think that she wants to become a big girl, and she wants to do things on her own. Her mom was supposed to take her to her first day of kindergarden but Cassie refused to let her go with her. She wanted to walk to school with her brother. I think that she wants to be just like her brother, but in the same breath, it is causing her trouble. She was in a fight that her brother was in.

Jamie is starting to also act more girly. He plays with little Cassie's dolls, and doesn't wanna play with his lego's He wants to trade off. He sleeps in Cassie's bed knowing that he isn't supposed to and he dresses up in his moms clothes. I think that their mother is becoming aware of this, but doesn't think much of it, because he's only six. He's been doing this often and refuses to do " big boy" things.

Its becoming scary now that their real dad isn't around much. Cassie is even starting to forget what he looks like, and Jamie is becoming more like a girl with his old man not around much. Their "New Daddy" is much different. He is laid back but both fathers pick on Jake, and because Cassie is only 3, they care less. 'm starting to think that the only reason that Jamie is doing this is for attention.

As i continue to reading this novel I often wonder, if I was as cunning as "Jamie"when i was kid? Or did I take on as much problems he takes on?

I have noticed that so far in the book, the father is very careless, yet hardworking. At the very beginning of the book Cassie's father, Sike, leaves her at the races, and remembers to take her older brother. The fathers friend drives Cassie home. The father is gone for a good month, with the children asking their mother many questions, but when their dad comes back, he is completely dirty and tired. It is very wierd
