part 1 of the book is done! oh wow is it good. christine is so interesting because you feel for her as she grew up poor during wwi, and was quickly swept up into this extravagant life w her aunt for such a short period, and yet it is all just taken away from her even quicker. i want to dislike her ungratefulness and anger, however, you also can’t as it is also unfair to her (because her aunts lowk just paranoid)

stefan zweig i’m your biggest fan! his writing is just so amazing, and this story is so amazing so far. you are just immediately pulled in with christine to this world of luxury and extravagance.

“once shame touches your being at any point, even the most distant nerve is implicated, whether you know it or not; any fleeting encounter or random thought will rake up the anguish and add to it” wow kinda crazy

My girl Christine just can’t catch a break 3
“All week long they looked forward to their day together, but by Sunday evening they always felt something was wrong, something made no sense. Poverty was crushing all the feeling they had. It was intolerable to be together this way, and yet they tolerated it.”

New character alert!!! I LOVED Ferdinand’s intro and his recounts on exactly what it was like living through a war—just to finally get back home and receive absolutely no support from his government despite all those years lost. His rage is perfectly understandable, and I can’t wait to see what’s to come for him (and potentially Christine?! 👀).

She just wanted to experience life without the burdens of her reality 💔 Was she a bit selfish and overzealous... Yes.. Is she a twenty-eight-year-old woman who never really got to LIVE? Also yes! She deserved more grace here imo. :-(

Oooh the intro has captivated me! I already want better for the MC 🥲
“No more struggling, no more striving, that’s the main thing! Breathe calmly, daydream quietly, do your work, water the flowers in the window, ask not, want not. No more asking for anything, nothing new, nothing exciting. The war stole her decade of youth. She has no courage, no strength left even for happiness.”
