I’m gonna catch up for book club. I’m gonna do it. This book is so sad. But man I do like it

Will anyone ever read my little progress markers here? I haven’t the faintest idea, but let it be known that I said on February 18th of 2026 that I am going to make this film.

getting adjusted to the weirdness of this book feels something like doing a cold plunge—unsettling and invigorating

Starting over in print after getting about halfway through the (admittedly delightful) audiobook—can’t wait to annotate this weird weird little book >:)

Updating my historic current reading list as I haven't been on in a good while.
Another victim of life getting busy. I was really enjoying my experience with this as it had a sharp blend of human, class and spiritual commentary. Adding to the 'start from the beginning' list.

Oh my god bro. The incandescent spirituality of existence. Time is a soup and love given never exits the world. Forever. Transgenerationalism. The present is just two spring rivers flowing into each other lit up and dappled with the sun.

The hardest left from Sedaris imaginable. It's always a delight to see the Orthodox Faith represented so well and fully. The childbirth chapter is one of the most knife's-edge, brutal passages I've ever read. The mixing of vernaculars is inspired. I'm waiting for this book to get weird again: stuff like Cristofer witnessing the next six hundred years of history of his new home, Arseny seeing himself in the fire, etc.

this is overly dark/black for absolutely no reason
You can just say the dead man was lying there naked. You can even say "birthday suit" to be more philological about it. Instead, the author says he had a big penis. Why?
Cuz dark was always acceptable in high brow literature.
Congratulations, don't complain about The Court of Sex and Parties. "The high brow lit" paved the way.
