I like how this book iterates on the possibilities of its magic system and the different reasons why people might do something, this is a setting that has room for both easy answers and not so easy answers and recognizes that sometimes (but only sometimes) the distinction isn't so clear

That... sure was a story hook, yeah, I can't wait to find out what happens next
