I get that the narrator is/was a dedicated public servant, but the impression I’m getting is he was not nearly cynical enough – earnestly believing that the Trump administration would follow a court order instead of just saying “fuck you we don’t have to do that” feels like the height of naïveté, but maybe earnest belief in the rule of law or whatever is how he ended up in this job in the first place

One thing that I don’t think this is grappling with - and maybe it is not really the intention of the author to speculate - is that a lot of of the actions described here are not just due to ideological ignorance, but rather malice. The DOGE boys and tech guys in charge of blowing the whole thing up are all pretty into eugenics and might see kids dying in developing countries as a net good.
