I’m within 77 pages of finishing! I knew from the outset that it would take me a while to finish, but still… I’m at 40 days. Oof. Too long. It’s going to feel good to be done. Then it’s just the chore of writing a substantive review. I have *so many* Ns & Qs to sort through. Double oof.

Another lesson of the book: how easily right-wing racists can be crushed, if the opposition has the temerity to do it instead of trying to appeal to them. They are ultimately very weak men; the problem is that America keeps voluntarily handing them power, despite being bitten over and over again.

The theme of Reconstruction, I’m gathering, is that even abolitionists did not think of Black people as fully human, and how quickly Republicans turned toward trying to win Democrat votes rather than holding them accountable for their ONGOING treason after the Civil War (and their history of HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES). Confiscation of their land was *the least* we could/ought to have done. 🤬
