The ride from mod to skinhead to soul boy to punk to fashion-forward Blitz kid is just wild. Elms' wonderfully descriptive writing makes me feel a part of the madness of these important moments in English youth culture.

"Our story was of great, unsung clothes-wearers. The restless elegance, the tribalism and dandyism of so many otherwise ordinary British kids in the second half of the twentieth century. That is what we were really celebrating with our little game. We were also lamenting a little, a nod to the knowledge that we now live in reduced times."
This. All of this.

I love the history of British youth subcultures and the fashions that go along with them. Elms deeply personal affection for the clothing that connects to mods, skins, and punks is infectious and engaging. Loving this so far!

Not bad so far, although I am starting to realise that I thought I was more interested in clothes than I actually am. I love the stuff about subcultures and their evolution although I could do without the in-depth analysis of every outfit that the author and his posse ever wore, which, when you think about it, is the whole raison d'être of the book. So I guess I am the only one to blame.
