Health and love and safety are not earned. They are not rewards for behavior. They are part of the luck that you have or you don’t have. When you have it, in your blind human innocence you think you have earned it. And when it is gone, you feel you have offended your gods.

In my touching innocence I thought I was the owner of the world’s most vivid and most distressing memory. The world is seldom charitable to fools.

Once you have destroyed somebody, and there’s no way to put the pieces together, and you know you’re going to live with a funny kind of remorse the rest of your life anyway, you can maybe dilute remorse through more destruction.

He's wordy and philosophical in this one, but at least there's zero attempt to be funny - something he has no talent for at all.

Still good. No gimmicks: kooky family, love boat, 10 pages of describing a kiss (to keep the women buying his books). None of this crap so far. Hard to believe.
