I mean this when I say that my interpersonal communications class I took my sophomore year in college was more effective than any of the education classes I took. So much of this book has been a repeat of that class, but without the flair of Dr. Tighe.

When students mix their new knowledge with something the person already knows.
Brainstorming, Socratic dialogues?
Ask these questions for cognitive skills :
1) the brain looks for similarity
2) is it a smaller part of the whole?
3) who is controlling the narrative ?

Amazing how so many schools decided on a school -wide book reading. Also a lot of 5 stars too!

If you work in education - this is great quick read with a nuggets to remind us that assets and moving students away from learned helplessness is essential for all to flourish.

Reading this for my work (paid) book club and I’m actually really enjoying it. I don’t read nonfiction that often (ever really, unless required for school) but I’ve already learned so much about myself and how to be a better educator. Definitely recommend it so far for teachers!

I’m reading this for a college class. I agree with very specific parts of the book. I have to write summaries and deep dive on each and every chapter. I find what I read interesting, and I wish everyone taught the way that is described here.

This isn't my usual read, since my primary audience is adult learners, but I was curious when an educator friend made an impassioned push on Facebook.

Look, I know this is not written for academics. But it needs to source some of its assumptions and it needs some editing - it keeps introducing conceptual distinctions and not explaining them. Or using contrary examples!!

Loving the framework so far. I think it's useful to see the various levels of culture as well as how taking into consideration sociocultural contexts and history is so important as well.

It turns out that when I’m not under a time crunch it’s a lot easier to read. What a concept. 😂
