Bought a $5 box of old books which included this one. My favorite genre is the autobiographical short story, and that’s exactly what this is. My family has farmed in Western Kansas for 6 generations so this is a particularly precious find, for me. My Gma has been gravely ill this year and I am grappling with her coming loss. This collection is helping me feel closer to her even though I’m 850 miles away.

I've read only a few pages, I see why Mom enjoyed this book.
"The land is a passionate lover; she commands time, money, devotion. She rewards you always with beauty & delight, but she makes no promise beyond that. If you are faithful she will feed & clothe you, but the land is a jealous mistress..."
No one can understand this relationship between a man & the land until they have been on the farm at least 1 year.

"Oh, don't ever waste your sympathy on a lady with a hoe. Her mind is busier than her hands."
That is most likely one reason that I often enjoy menial tasks - whether its housecleaning, yard work, or farm chores. My body is occuppied, the patterns of task-memory are engaged at an almost unconscious level - is that left-brain? - the creative mind is set free to wander, explore, observe, plan, dream, remember, commune
