Another slow start, hard to get into the story.

This book is extremely hard to get through!

Quote from pg 81: "She gave me a girlish smile that was at violent odds with the thin stream of smoke she immediately blew from her lips. It hung for a moment, seductively coiling and recoiling itself much like that infamous original serpent..."

I'm glad that the tingling of my queer senses wasn't unfounded.

I'm gaining the understanding that the narrator my not be trustworthy.

Women who did this, were subjected to listening the confessions of killers and rapists. Not an easy drive.

Am I supposed to be getting such good vibes from the Lieutenant Detective??

This is so cleverly written that I don't want to put it down. Lots of repetition within Rose's character/thoughts and assumptions. But as it gets dicier and dicier in her "choices"?? Better than the others of hers I have read. The whip daring breakout feel of the 1920's is here full spades too.

The first 10 pages of this book made me laugh. Oh did they bring back the memories. It was the same in 1965- typing DID open so many doors. What a dishy old-fashioned tale! Thanks for the lead.

I am beginning to be pulled into this book and putting together a picture of the character of the main witness to events - I am thinking that it is a very particular view point that is being taken.

It took a bit to get into but, once I trudged through that part I rather enjoyed it.

Reading two books because I’m so indecisive. (Wait, no I’m not. Well, maybe I am. On second thought . . . )

I like the way the narrator weaves in quick moments that remind you that she is in some sort of custody, being evaluated, perhaps being made to tell this story. There's a reason why she's telling this story in this specific way.

First audiobook. I converted and I must admit I’m enjoying it greatly

“See, the thing about details is they’re nearly impossible to fabricate with any plausible success. . . We humans lack the graceful capacity the gods have for total chaos. We are unable to come up with a pattern so free of obvious categorization; instead, we know the world by types, by only the most common chains of cause and effect, by the rote and familiar. There is a reason they say God is in the details.”

Technically I already knew that this protagonist is an unreliable narrator going into the book, but when you start to pick up the little pieces here or there as you're going, it starts to get really fun.

A book with a lot of mystery and I really would like to find out what’s going on. The audiobook is very well.

Listening to the audiobook at work. Decided to read this book because of a review I saw in GoodReads, as well as for the audiobook. It is set in New York of the 1920s it am interesting era.
