Status Updates From The Morbid and Sultry Tales...

"How's married life?" I asked, changing the subject.
My friend had found the silver lining.

"Sometimes, people want help. They f*ck up their lives just enough they're forced to get it. Sometimes, people don't want help. They f*ck up their lives so much, you can't help even if you wanted to. He created different demons, so he wouldn't have to face the one that haunted him since that day."

"And Gen, if something happens & it scares the f*ck outta you, & you feel like you gotta shut down...that's your heart protecting itself. The thing you need to realize is, it's not your job anymore. That's your fella's job & from what I can tell, he's pretty happy to have it."
I looked down at my half-eaten cake & said, "I can't eat cake & cry at the same time."
"Seems like chicks always do that shit in the movies."

Visiting his parents' graves together, it was like he gave me that last broken piece of his heart and handed it to me. I understood how precious that was, and I would never, ever f*ck it up again.
Unless, of course, I died suddenly, but that was was really out of my hands.

I stood in place, stunned silent by emotion as he stepped off the small porch and met me.
"You came," he whispered.
I nodded, my eyes welling up with tears.
"I don't want to live without you, Gen. It's the same as being dead."
"I know," I whispered back as I reached for his hand. "I'm so sorry, Ahren. I couldn't... I just..."
He put his forehead against mine. "I know, baby. I know."

"He's willing to let you go because he loves you that much."
"Just like the first time," I said.
She was right, it was romantic. And furthermore, he knew me, just like I told her he did & there was no way in hell I was saying no to that. And maybe, just maybe, I could tell him honestly why I'd asked him to leave.
"It looks like I'm celebrating my first Thanksgiving in ten years." I smiled.
"Halle-f*cking-lujah!"

"You into necrophilia? Cause this right here," she pointed to me with her thumb, "is the walking dead."
"I...why are you doing this?" My almost-pissed-off mood was turning to hurt.
"Because I love you & I want to see you happy, & I think this is your second chance, & I don't want you to blow it because you're scared someone you love is gonna die."
My eyes filled with tears at her words, bittersweet, but mostly sweet.

I stood & walked out of the room[...]. The holidays always sucked. Always. She gave me about thirty seconds of solitude before she followed me.
"I get it, I do & you know I love you but skankin' at the Fish Fry when we're fifty might be a little try-hard. Know what I mean?"
"I know what you mean but I already had one heart-to-heart today," I said to the mirror. "I can't do two in one day. Give me ten & we'll go, 'k?"

In his mind, no matter what the circumstances, they both knew there were some things you could not deny, and whatever had grown between them from the time they were kids, it was still there. He was sure of it, and seeing her walk out of that club, [...]she was breathtaking. He caught the glint of sweat on her neck, wanting nothing more than to pull her to his chest and lick it off.
But not yet.

that sure was different.

“Ah, you’ll find someone better. Tears should only be wasted on an asshole if you have hemorrhoids.”

“When the cemetery flooded after that big storm when you were, what, ten?” I was actually eleven. “You were right there, with big eyes, checking out the bones floating around, asking if you could keep one.” I like her!

“I can wait to move in with you…”

“And I can wait to have kids.”

“But I am going to fuck you anywhere, everywhere, and whenever I get the chance,” he said. “Does that work for you?”
