It’s SO boring. I was hoping for useful notes to use with our poetry study but… it’s just more of a story of his favourite movies and influences. It’s not very personal.

Really trying to savour this one, the use of language is as delicious would be reasonably expected by such a wordsmith.

I loved this! In some ways because it's great he's survived, partially because it reads like his poetry. It's his voice. If you're reading it and you know his work, you can hear him - his humour and his voice and his honesty shine through :)

Well, now we are getting to the more interesting bits.. fewer lists - perhaps his heroin habit has wiped some of the more insidious details - but nevertheless there are lots of lists of names etc. JCC is 5 years older than me at 72 (currently) and yet he seems to remember the most insignificant details which don't add much to what is underneath - an interesting journey. I am still reading if that's any indication!

This first part is full of reminiscences which are not much more than lists of products he remembers from his youth joined together by some words and some actual biography... hoping it gets better.

Certain products called for a more exotic approach, evoking a level of sophistication known only beyond these shores. 'Cadum for Madam, enriched with a Parisian perfume'; Fry's Turkish Delight, 'full of Eastern promise'. Meanwhile, they came in search of paradise and found it in the new Bounty, 'far and away the most exotic chocolate treat', stuffed with 'South Sea Island magic' -- i.e. dessicated coconut.

Happy days; page 425 was the place where i found Slim Gaillard and it was special to him too.

Actually on page 400 of 470 but for some reason Goodreads does list the edition I have so can't switch to it.

This was my best Christmas present. I got through it really quickly. As you would expect, Mr Clarke writes in a way that is easy to follow.
The 70s is described in a way that I remember it and the nostalgia practically drips from the page.
Truly a rebel trailblazer who stuck around long enough to become almost respectable, he's earned his favourite extravagance, fancy hotels
