Dongfang Qingcang had assumed the Shuofeng-torn hole in his chest had healed, yet a dull blade was digging into the softest part of his heart. It ached, sore and stinging. He couldn’t describe or explain it, such was this unspeakable pain.

He wanted to reach for her, to touch her-cruelly enough, he even wanted to pinch her. These desires swelled in his heart, filling him with urgent want, reducing him to an impatient youth.

Since the ancient past, the Demon Lord had free rein over the Three Realms. He’d tasted the blood of countless enemies and faced countless storms of sword glares uncaring. But he never once imagined there’d come a day where he was kissed, on the battlefield, right in front of the face of his enemy.

"So please stop being nice to me. Don't go out of your way to protect me, don't concern yourself with what I'm thinking. When you do that..." Xiao Lanhau grimaced. "When you do that, you don't seem like a villain at all... You'll make me want to hold onto my life, you'll make it so I can't bear to leave the world, can't bear to lose this time I have with you... You can't." She buried her face in her hands in despair.

“You, too, are anathema. You must be obliterated from the realms to ensure its safety.”

No one in this world had ever been stupid enough to say they trusted him. Yet this idiot had. And in that moment, he himself had turned into an idiot, his heart thawing more than ever before.

From the beginning, Dongfang Qingcang had looked down on others. To him, the weak belonged underfoot, yet her permitted Xiao Lanhua to stand beside him. He allowed her to question him, guess at what he was feeling, and--even when it was a matter of life and death--pull some truly nonsensical schemes. He was stunned by how much he indulged her, how much he'd grown used to her presence.

She turned shining eyes on Dongfang Qingcang and got on her tiptoes to whisper in his ear. Unfortunately, with his perfect posture, she still couldn't reach. He looked askance at Xiao Lanhua and then, to her surprise, bent down to her.

"No wonder you're so stupid," he said sneering. "You're a flower sprite raised by a bookworm."
