This book probably would have been more interesting if it followed the older son once he left, seeing a rebellion from the pov of a mother staying in her house with her kids acting out very slightly isn’t exactly a riveting concept

I didn’t think I cared that much about imagery or descriptions until there were none. ‘She wakes up to the sound of war’, alright that’s chill sure.

Devastated to realize this is written in a style I HATE aka no paragraph breaks and no quotation marks around dialogue. I think the amount of difficulty this creates in focusing and understanding what is happening outweighs the author's attempt to create a certain mood.

Ugh her kids are annoying shits and whenever the daughter stands up for the mother, the mother treats her like shit. Typical Irish bollix dynamics with Irish mothers and their shithead sons

I think I’m going for a very, very, personally, rare DNF on this one. Maybe I started reading it in the wrong moment (remember when riots were being stoked outside asylum seeker accommodations) or maybe I just couldn’t hack how incredibly hard every single sentence was written.

I want to love this but so far it’s a bit slow and domestic considering it’s a police state situation, I hope it picks up but bit of a drag so far. Characters are whatever and have gotten used to the way it’s written now but still don’t love it.

Taking a break from this upsetting book to read a bit of another upsetting book. Why am I doing this to myself...

Feels like Orwell's 1984, but set in modern Ireland. I'm terrified, but can't stop reading.

The writing style is just like Sally Rooney. If you don't enjoy her writing (no quotation marks), you will not like this. I personally love it, but I get the annoyance some people have of this style.

Kind of reminds me of a certain organisation in muricah that bears a name similar to that of the solid state of water ❤️

I really should have looked up what this book was about before I read it. Absolutely gutting. Hits too close to home.

A very difficult book to read right now. When the government takes over and your family is a victim how do you respond. Not sure I can continue but it is one of the few books I brought with me on this trip. Feels more dystopian than historical fiction. The troubles are all around us. How do we respond?
