This was just an ok novel. Although I'm glad I read it to get into the series, looking back I'd recommend any new persons to the series start in the second book (The Elfstones of Shannara). The writing in this first book is a bit sluggish at times and the first half is soooo much a cheap riff on LotR. There's glimpses of the good parts in later books in the series
