The Black Country was that second awkward album, disappointing after a stunning debut & not leaving much hope for what's to come.
The Devil's Workshop is that triumphant third album & return to form, t'was superb.
(Mixing musical references with books here, sorry.)

Who are you people, and what have you done with the characters I liked in the last two novels?

Fired?! Are they going to start a private detective agency next book? There will be a next book, right? Goodness...

Things have certainly picked up here toward the end! And there's Hammersmith's injury. I was thinking earlier while Day was stuck in chains that usually it's Hammersmith that takes the beatings in these books. :)

How would Napper know Jack the Ripper was out? His seizure give him a psychic vision of what's happening in the rest of the book? He got captured in the tea house before Griffin tried to take Cinderhouse down to the cells and it's not like Griffin was planning to let Jack escape even if he did feel the need to tell Napper that he was planning to take him to suffer in the same prison as Jack the Ripper.

Cut out his tongue?!! I'm sorry but I would not be sewing any suits after someone cut out my tongue. For one thing, if you believe all the old distressed women's threats to bite off their tongue and die as a form of suicide I don't know that Cinderhouse would even survive that treatment. And for another thing of my goodness I'd have run away when the dude left the room. Hello, prison was better!

I'm really not a fan of these Jack the Ripper interludes. What I liked so much about the second book (which I read first thanks to book club) was the relationship between Day and Hammersmith. We've barely had anything of them so far. We've had chapters more of Jack's twisted look on life and I don't particularly enjoy those unless they somehow relate to the main characters.

I can't decide if March is too obviously a secret bad guy to actually be a secret bad guy or not. I'm pretty sure he's part of the Karstphanomen who want to punish criminals by inflicting their crimes on them and is the policeman Jack the Ripper recognized despite the blindfold. However, he's so obviously suspicious to me though not the characters that it might be a red herring...

Stalled because it's just a little too graphic to read while eating lunch.

So far, it definitely lives up to the expectations set by the first two books in the Yard series. Very hard to put down.
