You are so resilient and yet so strange. You can sit with the worst atrocities, and then complain that nothing is happening. I know, I know. You can't possibly handle so much pain at once, and so the brain flattens, normalizes, until you cease to feel anything at all. People died, yes, we know, it's very sad. Now, what else?

"Tyranny doesn't happen in the blink of an eye. It is a slow descent, helped by the complicity of those who think they have now power. Naias was here for a long time. She didn't change.
I would have acted differently, you say, thinking up all the different vectors that make you special. I would have seen this for what it was. I would have stood up against injustice.

this is decent, but I'm struggling with two things, mainly
1. the pacing. WHY is this book so long? I feel like there are a lot of things that are repetitive or could be truncated and streamlined and it would be better
2. both the narrator and the text make the little girl seem super super naive and super super young (7-8) BUT SHE'S SUPPOSEDLY TWELVE. really grating to hear her voice
