Schöne Beschreibungen, spannendes Setting; viele Figuren; komplizierte, schwierige Sprache an viele Stellen; es dauert bis man weiß wie die Personen zueinanderstehen

Good. Some complications. A very large number of characters. Every chapter seems to begin with several paragraphs using only a personal pronoun. The reader has to figure out who is being referred to.

Can one put a price on peace? No, he thinks. Everyone would balk at the cost. No one would want it.

There's only one person he knows who can comprehend what has been done, who will want to wound.
"Send a coach to Morba," he says. "Bring my mother back here."

Listening to audiobook in English, finding it very distracting how many mispronunciations got past the producers. Did they save on headcount by using the same narrator for multiple editions?

Still, it frightens him to live in the same world of matching parts, but never understand how he’s meant to exist within it. To carry an essential dissonance with him in his voice, his appearance, his thoughts like the tolling of a cracked misshapen bell.

i find the portrayals in this book rather lacking. its particularly glaring with leonardo. they are writing him as if he was some talented painter but leonardo was not some botticelli or whatever, he was the blueprint for the renaissance man, a polyman, a genius of ample curiosity. i honestly expected more from his characterization but this book definitely inspired me to pick up a nonfiction book about him.

i accidently discouvered by browsing some wiki articles about the verrocchio gang that the dude on the cover comes from a painting by Pietro Perugino titled 'Apollo and Marsyas'. so its actually Apollo on the cover.

“You’re to register. Today,” Andrea says. “I’ve been too patient with you. You should’ve gone with Domenico and Perugino. They’re already working. Sandro, I hear, is even meeting with the Medici. After today, that could be you.”
Verrocchio prolly be like im so sick of your talented ass hanging about my studio and making me look like an amateur.
i know i would certainly be if i had a student like leonardo.

“Before stepping up to the coach, he glances back—not to his wife or his brother or even his mother but to the nude David alone in the courtyard’s center.”
the nice thing about historical fiction with real people is that u can look up the works of art and see how they look. (here they are talking about the statue of david by donatello)

finally a book about our fave gay genius leonardo. plus ive always wanted to learn more about that period. there is also lorenzo medici which apparently was not overtly featured among leonardo's main patrons so im looking forward to seeing what the author is cooking here with the two of them. (and i have no idea who the third dude is)
