They’re all envious of his memory loss, … even the friars envy him, to them interchangeability of appearance and personality is the greatest good, a form of detachment that brings them closer to God, and they see him as the undeserving recipient of what they must earn with a lifetime of suffering, and …everyone fills him in just as they please, like a coloring book, and he cannot stop them.

But she stares at him, and deep disillusionment shadows her lovely features, so deep that all the beauty rushes out of her, and her dark eyes fill with tears and she shakes her head, not in quiet denial, but wildly, as if to punish herself for entertaining naive, stupid thoughts for weeks, thoughts she now wishes to cast off by force.
