This takes place in 1977 in Iran, 3 years after Ayatollah Khomeini took control of the government. The protagonist had joined the Iranian guard to try to protect his family from political persecution. The paranoia and stress are palpable. I know many who lived through this period in Iranian history and the tone is true to their experiences.
The English is a little rough. I'm checking to see if it is a translation.

A sense of obligation can be a terrible thing. I won this book but it is so filled with very graphic violence that I don't want to read it but I feel that I owe it to the author to continue reading. This book is not really my kind of book.
